The Netherlands now has NATO air defense around a logistics hub in Poland. Yesterday, the task went during an official transfer from the German to the Dutch Air and Missile Defense Task Force (AMDTF).

2 soldiers are at an air defense system.

The Netherlands protects the logistics hub in Poland from which material support goes to Ukraine. This is part of NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU). That coordinates and facilitates the training of Ukrainian soldiers and provides military support to the country.

The military equipment donated by NATO countries to Ukraine must safely reach its destination. The Dutch air defense enables NSATU to do so.

Layered air defense

The Dutch command includes the entire security task. This means that the 3 different capacities are used integrated. In addition to 2 Patriots, it involves the Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile (Nasams) air defense system and anti-drone systems. With this, the Netherlands, together with partners, provides layered air defense. It is used against possible threats from ballistic missiles, crusade weapons, fighter jets, helicopters and drones.

Several NATO countries rotate in the protection of the logistics center. The German colleagues carried out the task for the past 11 months. This was done with Norwegian and Polish partners, with some of the aforementioned capabilities. The Netherlands will secure the junction until June 1, 2026. NATO has yet to decide which country will be next.

The Netherlands used the period from 1 to 10 December to take over the duties of the Germans.
